Every guide on The Hen Keeper is written to answer one question: would this actually work in a typical UK back garden?
How we choose products
- UK availability first. We only recommend products you can buy from UK retailers, priced in pounds and suitable for British weather.
- Specs checked, not copied. We compare build materials, dimensions, real hen capacity, ventilation, cleaning access and warranty — not just the manufacturer’s headline claims.
- Owner feedback. We read long-term owner reviews and keeper forums to spot problems that only show up after a winter or two, such as rotting floors, red mite hiding places or doors that fail in the cold.
- Hands-on where possible. When we have used a product ourselves, we say so. When a recommendation is based on research rather than hands-on use, we make that clear too.
What we look for
- Predator protection, especially against foxes and rats.
- Ease of cleaning and red mite control.
- Durability in rain, wind and frost.
- Honest value for money — not just the cheapest option.
Keeping guides up to date
Prices, stock and models change. We review our main buying guides regularly and update them when better options appear or products are discontinued. Each guide shows when it was last updated.
