Four to six hens is the sweet spot for many British gardens: enough eggs for a family and a couple of neighbours, but not so many that the garden disappears under a muddy run. The catch is that many coops advertised for “6 hens” are really only comfortable for three or four. In this guide we pick the coops on Amazon UK we’d genuinely consider for a flock of four to six, and explain what to check before you buy.
Our top picks at a glance
| Coop | Stated capacity | Best for | Price (approx.) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Omlet Eglu Cube Large | Up to 6 large hens | Best overall | £770 |
| FeelGoodUK Large Coop House | Free-range flock | Best value wooden house | £180 |
| PawHut Walk-in Run 3 x 1.7m | 3–5 chickens | Best run to pair with a house | £106 |
The best coops for 4–6 hens
1. Omlet Eglu Cube Large — best overall
Omlet rates the Cube Large for up to six large hens, and it’s one of the few coops where that figure is realistic. It stands on legs, which gives hens a dry, sheltered area underneath and makes cleaning easier at standing height.
- Up to 6 large hens, 8 medium or 10 bantams
- Insulated twin-wall plastic
- Slide-out trays for easy cleaning
- Run sold separately on the listing we checked
What we like: Genuinely roomy, very secure and quick to clean. Red mite has very few places to hide.
Worth knowing: Expensive, particularly once you add a run. Read our full Eglu Cube review.
2. FeelGoodUK Large Coop House — best value wooden house
A solid tongue-and-groove hen house with four perches and a twin nest box. It’s a house only, so pair it with a walk-in run or let your hens free-range during the day.
- About 115 x 85 x 90cm
- Four roosting perches
- Twin-section nest box (expandable)
- No roofing felt — one less place for red mite
What we like: Four perches give a flock of four to five plenty of roosting space, at a fraction of the price of a premium plastic coop.
Worth knowing: You’ll need a separate run if your hens can’t free-range, and wooden coops need regular red mite checks and occasional treatment of the timber.
3. PawHut Walk-in Run (3 x 1.7m) — best run to pair with a house
If you choose a house-only coop, a walk-in run gives four to six hens a safe daytime space — and you can stand up inside it to top up feed and water.
- 3 x 1.7 x 1.9m (5.1m²)
- Galvanised steel frame with roof cover
- Large walk-in door
What we like: Excellent value for the space.
Worth knowing: Reinforce the lower mesh with welded mesh and add a buried skirt if foxes visit your garden. For six hens kept in all day, a larger run is better. See our walk-in runs guide.
How much space do 4–6 hens need?
- Coop floor: roughly 0.3m² per large hen as a minimum — so 1.2–1.8m² for four to six.
- Perches: 20–30cm per hen — roughly 1.2–1.8m of perch for six.
- Nest boxes: two boxes are plenty for six hens.
- Run: at least 1m² per hen, and much more if they’re shut in all day — 6–10m² is a comfortable size for six.

What to look for in a coop for 4–6 hens
- Realistic capacity. Ignore the headline figure and check perch length and floor area.
- Easy cleaning. With six hens, droppings build up quickly. Slide-out trays and a large access door save a lot of time.
- Fox security. Strong latches that a fox can’t nose open, solid panels and secure ventilation. Read our fox-proofing guide.
- Ventilation. More hens means more moisture overnight. Look for vents above perch height.
- Red mite resistance. Fewer joints, no felt roof and removable perches make mite control easier.
- Room for an automatic door. A pop-hole that will take an automatic door is a real convenience — see the best automatic coop doors.
Wooden or plastic for a bigger flock?
Wooden coops are cheaper and look traditional in a garden, but cheaper ones can warp, leak and harbour red mite. Plastic coops cost more but are faster to clean and often last longer. Our guide to wooden vs plastic coops goes through the pros and cons in detail.
Frequently asked questions
Can I keep six hens in a coop rated for six?
Only if the figure is realistic. Many budget coops rated for six are only comfortable for three or four. Check perch length and floor area.
How many nest boxes do six hens need?
Two is plenty. Hens share nest boxes and often all choose the same one.
Is a walk-in run worth it?
For four or more hens, yes. It gives hens more space and makes daily jobs far easier for you.
